§ 31. The choir helper must have periodic discussions with his brethren on another issue, namely, how they should act in their social intercourse with the female sex. A single brother should carry himself with modesty and respect in the presence of all sisters, and actually any woman. On the one hand, he should not act in an affected, shy, or fearful manner, whenever he should or must speak with them; on the other hand, he should not enter into a familiar and intimate discourse with them but rather hold true personally to the established segregation in the congregation. It is therefore a general rule for our single brethren not to accept any intimate confessions of the heart from a woman, nor offer any themselves. A single brother should have love and respect for all the sisters’ choirs, but he should keep his eyes and senses away from making any one or the other person the object of his attention, so that he is then led into false thoughts and fantasies that might harm his soul. A single brother, who inclines toward conversation with the sisters, or looks toward them, will feel punishment in his heart immediately (if the Holy Spirit does not withdraw because left unheeded), and if he does not follow this reminder, then it is a sign that his heart is not true and he is in danger of losing his soul.
